VEX AI RSA @ UC Berkeley

RoboRumbles | Special Edition: Robolabs Summer Academy

Greetings, Robolabs Family!

Welcome to a very special edition of RoboRumbles! This July, we’re thrilled to highlight the incredible success of the Robolabs Summer Academy at UC Berkeley, our exciting new offering for the upcoming season, and the final opportunities to join our summer camps. Let’s dive into all the excitement!

Robolabs Summer Academy: A Resounding Success!

The Robolabs Summer Academy (RSA) at UC Berkeley was an absolute hit! We had students from California, Oregon, Arizona, Tennessee, New Jersey, Texas, China, and Argentina, making it a truly international event. Over five days, participants were immersed in the hottest tech topics, engaged with top-notch speakers, and formed lasting connections.

Here’s a recap of the five days filled with learning, innovation, and fun:

Day One: AI Basics and Neural Networks

We kicked off with a warm welcome and an introduction to AI basics, followed by a deep dive into neural networks and deep learning. The day was capped off with a guest talk by Prachi Tiwari from Google, who shared insights on AI applications in Google’s tech stack. The evening featured a hands-on workshop on building generative-enabled AI web apps led by Patrick O’Connor from Amazon Web Services.

Day Two: Computer Vision and Object Detection

The deep dive into neural networks continued, followed by an engaging lecture on computer vision and object detection techniques. Students got hands-on with shape recognition activities using Intel RealSense and object detection with the YOLO model. The highlight was a guest lecture from Americo Carvalho of AWS, who discussed data practices, ML innovation, and the future role of AI officers.

Day Three: VEX Sensors and CAD Modeling

We started the day with a session on VEX sensors, followed by a competitive Kahoot quiz. Dynamic AI-powered programming and control systems concepts were introduced, and an interactive CAD modeling workshop was facilitated. Kelly Tang from Keenon Robotics shared insights on service robots, and the day ended with a fun indoor rock-climbing session.

Day Four: VEX Strategy and Hardware Architecture

The day started with a session on strategic insights for the VEX AI Robotics Game, followed by sessions on the VEX GPS coordinate system and path planning. Students learned about various path-planning algorithms and the hardware architecture of the VEX AI system, including the NVIDIA Jetson Nano and Intel RealSense cameras. After an exciting field trip to Fisherman’s Wharf, students wrapped up the day preparing for their final presentations.

Day Five: College Application Tips and Final Presentations

Current MET Berkeley Student, Alfonso Portilla Rivero, provided valuable college application tips, and students were walked through the VEX AI Competition Template, covering modular code development and object detection structures. Vela Rajesh inspired everyone with his journey from a Robolabs coach to a robotics entrepreneur and Tesla engineer. The academy culminated with impressive final presentations, showcasing the students’ creativity and hard work.

Would you recommend this program? A review from a camper sums it up perfectly:

“I would definitely recommend this program as I had a lovely experience and would wish it for others. The people I met were great and the skills and thought processes I acquired are so valuable for their uniqueness and specificity.”

We can’t wait to welcome even more bright minds to our Robolabs Summer Academy next summer—get ready for bigger, bolder adventures, and stay tuned for all the thrilling details!
